Do I need to charge it before installing?

No. It ships charged and ready.

Why use a maintainer?

Machines sit. A maintainer keeps it topped so it starts when you need it and helps maximize lifespan.

How is this different from a cheap battery?

So far this battery is performing great. My 10 year old H-D AGM battery was giving me trouble, would not hold charge for more than a couple of days, then it would not start the bike. Since installing this battery a couple of weeks ago, I have not had to plug the trickler in and the bike turns over like a champ and starts every time.

I am 78 years old and my gas cans I use for my riding mower are on the floor in my garage. So again I went with BRS as my new ATV Battery because the one I bought for my side by side worked so well why not deal with local. The battery comes pre-charged ready for install not like them other batteries.
The price was about $12 cheaper then Yuasa and was delivered to my door in less than 32 hrs can't get better than that and like I say its keeping our money in Canada/Ontario.
