Lithium Batteries vs. Lead Acid Batteries for RVs, Boats, & Solar

Andy Mainville

Andy here, and lately I’ve gotten a few questions about if lithium batteries are actually worth it for Solar, RV’s, Boats, and Deep Cycle Applications…

Before we go any further let’s point out the one thing everyone knows about lithium batteries…

The price…

Yes, I know the price is much more expensive compared to traditional batteries but the bottom line is they last much longer.

In some cases you might need to swap conventional batteries out every 2 or 3 years depending on maintenance…

The big difference between lithium batteries vs traditional batteries is maintenance…

Lithium batteries require no regular maintenance…

Yes, it’s true…

All batteries degrade over time, but lithium batteries degrade at a much slower rate compared to lead-acid batteries so it results in a much longer lifespan.

Another major difference between these two battery systems is the amount of available power each will deliver to your applications.

In other words, you can store more energy and access more power in lithium-ion batteries.

They have a more dense and efficient energy storage system.

This translates to more power available to you and the electrical systems which is very important in boats, RV’s, and solar applications.

Bottom line…you can run more electrical equipment for longer with lithium batteries.

Unlike lead-acid batteries, they deliver full power even as the energy level is depleted in their cells.

Lead-acid batteries need to maintain at least a 50% charged level.

But lithium batteries can be depleted up to 85% without damaging the batteries or diminishing the available power.

With lithium batteries, you do not need to add fluid or clean the battery terminals.

And they weigh about 1/3 of the weight of traditional lead batteries.

They are not dangerous, nor do they emit any fumes.

On the other hand, with lead batteries, it’s recommended that you have a battery power management system installed. But it is essential with a new lithium battery system.

If you drive a motorhome or a boat in some cases there are both 120 volt AC circuits and 12 volt DC circuits in the house portion of the cabin plus the battery in the chassis that starts the engine and performs some other electrical tasks.

A travel trailer may have different systems.

Each rig is set up a little different from all the others.

The battery bank (the entire battery set-up) is designed to deliver the correct power to every electrical component in your rig.

This includes the plugins, refrigerator, entertainment center, fireplace, lights, etc.

These battery banks may also be set up to work with one or more inverters.

This system must be replicated with a lithium-ion battery bank in order to meet the electrical demand in your rig.

An installation of new lithium batteries will also require a battery management system. This performs several functions, including balancing the power input during the recharge cycle. It also provides valuable information about the lifecycle and charge level in the battery bank.

That’s exactly why I love the new Volthium Lithium batteries…

Volthium Lithium

They offer an LCD screen, whose management of the charge status is controlled by the BMS. This is a major improvement compared to the competition.

This battery model includes the low temp cut off protection, in a smaller size (group 24), with the same power as the group 31 and it’s a 100% Canadian design that allows for 100% optimization of the energy to space ratio.

Never before has a lithium battery given such an amazing performance.

This battery will last at least 10 years, and certainly more!

The BMS is easily accessible to guarantee an extended life for the entire battery park. This makes the battery easily repairable in case of accidental misuse, and avoids having to replace the entire battery bank for a single battery to be replaced.

In addition, the isolated BMS in a private chamber extends the operating range of the battery in terms of temperature, as the heat generated by the BMS will not reach the cells.

Access to the BMS also allows the addition and

customization of additional parameters over time.

The Volthium BMS technology is powered by TexasInstrument and is specially designed for the harsh Canadian environment, coupled with our Grade A+ Cells… which they get from a supplier famous for its contracts with LG Chem, Audi, BMW, and Tesla.

This  ensures you have the best battery in North America in your hands.

It’s easy and quick to install, thanks to their weight being 2X LIGHTER than a conventional battery.

Volthium lithium batteries offer you a shorter charging time and an energy capacity that does not run out over the years.

Volthium has a mission to bring together the best parts available from each of the industries and put them together in one battery! Cells, BMS, assembly engineering, it's all there.
